Many of us are concerned about the questionable materials that reside on the fruits and vegetables we bring home from the store (dirt, pesticides, creepy crawlies). Organic isn’t always an option. I am ashamed to admit this, but sometimes I forget to wash the fruit and veggies off right away. Rushing, I throw everything in the fridge so I can react to my kids. Such a bad habit. Washing with water removes about the majority of unwanted bacteria. To remove more unwanted material a 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar solutions works well. I am trying to get into the habit of dumping all my fruits and veggies into the sink as soon as I unload the groceries from the car. Smaller items such as blueberries and strawberries go in a collander and I squirt the vinegar rinse over them. This way I am more likely to prep the vegetables for the week once I finish putting the rest of the groceries away. Please note that following your rinse a waxy residue may appear on some of your apples. This will not hurt you; you would have to eat an ubelievable amount for the waxy substance to reach harmful levels. However, a quick scrub with baking soda removes the waxy cover. Make sure to rinse the baking soda before eating.

What To Do
- Dump all large fruits and veggies into a 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar solution in your CLEAN sink.
- Soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Clean smaller fruits and veggies (such as blueberries) by putting them in a collander and squirting a 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar solution over the items.
- Remove waxy residue by quickly scrubbing the items with a bit of baking soda.
I am currently working on a master routine for organizing meal and kitchen tasks. Presently the routine occurs on Sundays so I can leave the kids at home when I venture out to the store. Before beginning I make sure the kitchen is clean and the dishwasher is emptied. To begin with, I clean out the fridge, removing left overs and expired items. Next, I do a quick assessment of what is in the cupboard. This knowledge allows me to sit down with my meal binder and create a grocery list and meal plan for the week that takes into account what items we already have. I have two sets of meal plans: a crock pot/dump meal set for really busy weeks and a non-crock pot set for less busy weeks. Yep, I get tired of crock pot meals after about two weeks. I head off to the grocery store and grab everything off my list (plus some extra staples). As soon as I get home I unload the car. Before putting anything away I fill up the CLEAN kitchen sink with a 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar solution and plop all my larger fruits and veggies into the sink. I set the oven timer for 15 minutes and put all the other groceries away. When the timer sounds, I take the fruits and veggies out of the sink, pat them dry and put them away. This is a great opportunity to prep your fruits and veggies for the week.
